Once the program comes to an end, most people are left with a bitter taste in their mouth about not being hired full time by the company. What are some of the things you can do in order to get hired as soon as your internship is over?
Choose a relevant internship
Always go for the internship that resonates with your professional goals. For example, if you are a graphic designer who wants to specialize in book design, don’t look for an internship in advertisement. You might have a good experience while it lasts, but you will soon feel as if you could have chosen a better program for yourself.
Go into it with goals
Just because you are presented with a job description and requirements that you need to meet doesn’t mean your experience will be fulfilling. Create personal goals based on what the company can do for you and how you can contribute back to it. Align these two as best as possible and you will have more motivation and energy to show up each day.
Communicate with your mentor
Most people are shy or aversive to their designated mentors. Don’t back away from communicating your plans, thoughts and opinions to your supervisor in the company. The best thing you can do for yourself is to express an out-of-the-box thought that leads to a new project or way of working that will also provide you with bonus points towards being hired.
Develop a working habit
Showing up to your internship on time is just as important as attending any business meeting or a job interview. Abiding by the working hours of the company and exceeding your own required time will make you a valuable asset to the company, not to mention the increased chances of getting hired afterwards based on your commitment.
Express your desires
While you shouldn’t open the internship with a wish to be hired afterwards, you should start giving hints towards that goal before the internship is over. If your mentor sees that you are dedicated and hardworking, they can put in a good word for you and ensure that you are kept around for a while longer.
Keep in mind that all of this rests on the shoulders of your success and results during the internship. If you are unproductive or cost the company actual revenue, it will lower your chances of being hired drastically. Do your best to justify your presence in the company and don’t worry about what comes after.
