You may be familiar with Samuel Huntington. He’s the political scientist who, in his last years, offered dire warnings that Hispanic and especially Mexican immigrants behave profoundly differently than immigrants coming to the U.S. from other countries, that they stubbornly refuse to integrate to such a degree that they will ultimately “divide the United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages.” Huntington referred to this problem as “The Hispanic Challenge.”

For years, the dominant trope in the media followed Huntington’s line. It didn’t matter that scholars were demonstrating that Huntington was wrong. As early as 2007 there was this article in the academic journal Perspectives in Politics called “Testing Huntington: Is Hispanic Immigration a Threat to American Identity?” In short, the answer was: No. The authors found:

Hispanics acquire English and lose Spanish rapidly beginning with the second generation… Moreover, a clear majority of Hispanics rejects a purely ethnic identification and patriotism grows from one generation to the next. At present, a traditional pattern of political assimilation appears to prevail.

But this wasn’t all that sexy a narrative, especially with commentators like Pat Buchanan, and politicians like former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) (a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008), screaming about how Latinos aren’t learning English enough, aren’t loyal to our country enough and aren’t integrating into American society enough. In recent months, however, we’re starting to see a change in the media narrative.

I was shocked in January when the 2007 article I referred to above served as the guts of a post at the Washington Post’s “Wonkblog.” But still, that was just a blog post.

This week, in the Sunday New York Times, there appeared a lengthy piece in the Week in Review section by NYT Washington Bureau Chief David Leonhardt called “Hispanics, the New Italians.” This was a clever rhetorical move, making the point that Hispanics, the “new” and “different” immigrants who supposedly posed an intractable challenge to the melting pot, are actually no different from the “classic” white ethnic immigrant groups of the original era from which the melting pot metaphor originated.

Leonhardt brings up Huntington and, crucially, connects the whole issue to the current debate in Congress over a comprehensive immigration reform package.

“Yet as the Senate begins to debate a major immigration bill, we already know a great deal about how Latinos are faring with that challenge: they’re meeting it, by and large. Whatever Washington does in coming months, a wealth of data suggests that Latinos, who make up fully half of the immigration wave of the past century, are already following the classic pattern for American immigrants.”

Huntington cited a Pew Research center report that demonstrates the point in great detail, and also summarized another report, this one by James P. Smith of the RAND corporation on labor patterns, which found “the trajectory of Latinos most closely resembles that of Italians, who also arrived with comparatively little education.” Bringing it all together, Leonhardt interviewed Professor Alan Kraut, a major scholar of immigration history at American University, who confirmed this take as well:

“These fears about immigrants have been voiced many times in American history, and they’ve never proven true…. It doesn’t happen immediately, but everything with Latinos points to a very typical pattern of integration in American life in a generation or two.”

When the media is filled with stories, often largely anecdotal but highly effective, about immigrants not learning English, or waving Mexican flags at immigration rallies, it makes people on the fence turn against immigration reform. But the opposite is true when such people feel that immigrants are integrating, assimilating, Americanizing. Seeing that makes people on the fence feel more positive about immigrants, and thus about reform. Let’s hope we see more of these kinds of pieces in the days and weeks leading up to the debate on Capitol Hill.

Pizza Hut is launching an app for Xbox Live, letting users order a pizza through their Xbox 360.

Once you’ve linked your Xbox Live account with a Pizza Hut account, and chosen the nearest pizza parlor, orders can be made using the game controller, voice input or Kinect gestures. And for those looking to combine ingredients for that perfect pizza, custom orders are also available.

This, of course, is not the only way to digitally create an order your pizza online — Domino’s iPad app comes to mind — but given the historical link between gaming and pizza, it might be the most natural.

“If you look at our audience, they love pizza. I mean, who doesn’t? It has international appeal, and Pizza Hut is a recognized brand that matches up well with the Xbox brand,” Xbox’s Larry Hryb told Polygon.

The app should be live starting today, April 23. To sweeten (salt, pepper?) the deal, Pizza hut will give Xbox users a 15% off their first purchase, as long as they download the app and make the order before May 6.

Red Bull’s triple world champion Sebastian Vettel was in Russia on Monday to visit the new Sochi Olympic Park Circuit, which hopes to host a Russian round on the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar. Whilst there Vettel shared his thoughts on the circuit and spoke about his hope of racing in Russia at some point in the future.

Q: Sebastian, what potential does the Sochi track have from a driver’s perspective?
Sebastian Vettel: I would say a massive one. Of course I can only judge it after I have been driving it – but from what I see I expect it to be massive. The venue looks just incredible. The Olympic Park – and the circuit right in the middle – that is unique in the world so it will be something very special to be part of the first Russian Grand Prix.

Q: As you said, it is a track that is incorporated into the Olympic Village. Do you think that this can become some sort of role model for future tracks?
SV: First of all: the track here definitely stands out with all those impressive buildings and stadiums around – how far it can be a role model I am not able to answer. One thing I can say: in the past years we have seen some new tracks that are pretty much away from a city – and the Sochi track is right in the middle. That could give a hint for future developments. The people will return to this place after the Olympics and after a Formula One race because it is an area obviously with a huge recreational value with the Black Sea in front and the mountains behind with impressive ski resorts.

Q: Will you attend the Sochi Olympic Games next year to have another glimpse at the track and to follow some of the competitions?
SV: That will depend on my schedule, but as I have never been to an Olympic Games – neither the summer nor the winter version – maybe I will.

Q: Is it about time that Russia gets a Formula One race?
SV: I think so. If you consider the sheer size of the country and the importance of Russia on a global scale, then it’s a bit of a surprise that we haven’t had a Russian Grand Prix before Sochi 2014.

Q: Have you already had a taste of Russian F1 fans? You and the Red Bull team are the first to come to Sochi
SV: Ah, it’s nice to be the first in almost anything! (laughs) Well, look at the numbers that are following us around the globe. Russian fans are increasingly a part of the international fan community and it will jump up even more significantly once we have been racing in Sochi. When we arrived at the airport and were talking to some fans who came to greet us it was interesting to see that they all knew so much about Formula One – that they are real experts! (laughs)

The branded Twitter accounts for the CBS television network news shows 60 Minutes and 48 Hours, as well as the Twitter account of at least one CBS affiliate TV station, were hijacked over the weekend by pro-Syrian government hackers.

The accounts were used to send bogus messages that claimed that the United States government was aiding terrorists in Syria.

“Exclusive: Terror is striking the #USA and #Obama is Shamelessly in Bed with Al-Qaeda,” the hijackers tweeted from the @60Minutes account.

CBS has issued a notice and apology from the hacked accounts and from the Twitter account for CBS News.

A group sympathetic to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, known as the Syrian Electronic Army, claimed responsibility for the account hijackings Sunday, reported CNET.

The Syrian Electronic Army has launched similar attacks in the past against the websites and Twitter feeds of foreign news organizations, targeting Reuters, Al-Jazeera, the BBC and, most recently, National Public Radio.

Politics aren’t the only reason for Twitter hijacks; in February, the Burger King and Jeep Twitter accounts were taken over by pranksters who used them to make jokes about McDonald’s and Cadillac.

To make sure your Twitter account isn’t hijacked, use a strong, hard-to-guess password for your account, and make sure that password isn’t used anywhere else.

Latino small business owners are increasing in number. But the Latino business community still lacks access to that -oh-so-important resource: capital.

Latinos are one of the fastest-growing segments of small business owners in the United States. Estimates suggest by the end of the decade there could be as many as 12 million small businesses owned by Latinos.

A recent report from Biz2Credit, a website connecting small businesses with lenders, suggests assistance is needed to give Latino and other small business owners greater access to the capital they need.

The “Biz2Credit Small Business Lending Index” from March 2013 shows loan approval rates increased for the fourth consecutive month at small banks. Those rates reached an all-time index high of 50.8%. Rohit Arora, co-founder of Biz2Credit.com, says the numbers suggest the recovery is starting to bring relief to some small business owners.

But others continue to struggle. Among those are groups that have traditionally lacked access to capital, including Latino and women business owners.

Hector Barreto recently told Fox Business many factors contribute to this lack of access to small business loan capital among Latinos. Barreto is the former head of the U.S. Small Business Administration. He now leads The Latino Coalition, a national organization that represents Latino interests. The Latino Coalition is engaged in advocacy on behalf of Latinos, including Latino small business owners. The Latino Coalition also provides resources for Latino business owners.

Barreto used the interview to announce a partnership with Biz2Credit to help more Latino businesses obtain the financing and credit they need.

Barreto said recent data shows there are currently 3 million Latino small business owners in the U.S. He says businesses owned by these Latino entrepreneurs generate about $500 billion in sales annually.

For those itching to get their hands on Google Glass, executive chairman Eric Schmidt has good news: The high-tech specs will likely go on sale for consumers in a year.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4′s World at One on Monday, Schmidt said, “It would be fair to say that there’ll be thousands of these in use by developers over the next months. And then based on their feedback, we’ll make some product changes, and it’s probably a year-ish away.”

For the uninitiated, Glass is a $1,500 pair of augmented-reality glasses that includes a heads-up display, works through voice command and can take pictures. Explorer editions of Glass began rolling out to early adopters — many of whom are developers — last week.

For part of the 13-minute interview, Schmidt explained the basics of Glass to interviewer Martha Kearney, and said the device’s technology is far-reaching.

“There are tremendous numbers of applications that can be imagined — augmented reality, where you see what’s going on in real-time, and then we annotate that. We say, ‘oh that’s this building,’ or ‘this is something that you’ve already done,’ or those sorts of things.”

Google’s chairman added that society must develop a “new social etiquette” to address privacy concerns brought about by devices such as Glass.

“It’s obviously not appropriate to wear these glasses in situations where recording is not correct. And indeed, you have this problem already with phones. Companies like Google have a very important responsibility to keep your information safe, but you have a responsibility as well, which is to understand what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and behave appropriately and also keep everything up-to-date.”

A tiny church that has served Spanish-speaking Philadelphians for a century will be closed in June, leaving behind a history that stretches from Spain to Spring Garden Street and is marked by the benevolence of a future saint with a keen sense of inflation.

Katharine Drexel, the daughter of a Philadelphia investment banker who was canonized as a Catholic saint in 2000, contributed $1,080 toward the $12,250 purchase in 1912 of a Spring Garden property that became a cherished chapel, called La Milagrosa, where generations of Hispanics have worshiped.

Drexel, a careful steward of her family fortune, stipulated that her order of nuns should get a proportionate amount back if the chapel at 1903 Spring Garden St., purchased by Vincentian priests from Barcelona, were ever sold.

That day has come.

Vincentians in Barcelona decided last year to sell the chapel to help pay retirement costs for their priests in Spain – a move that could bring a tidy windfall of $75,000 to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, which Drexel founded in 1891.

“We are very appreciative to the Vincentians for informing us, keeping us in the loop, and honoring this in the way they have done,” Sister Sandra Schmidt, congregational treasurer and councillor for the Bensalem-based order, said this week.

Priests from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia have been saying Mass at La Milagrosa, which means “The Miraculous” in Spanish, since 1978, when the Vincentians departed.

The final Mass is scheduled for June 23, and on June 30 a procession will lead from the chapel to the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, where a weekly Spanish-language Mass will be added, the archdiocese said.

Members of the congregation, which is part of the cathedral parish, have protested the closure with complaints to archdiocesan officials, who insist they have no control because the archdiocese does not own the property.

Opponents of the closure, who are planning a protest vigil Sunday morning, also said they have received no response to letters sent to the Vincentians who ordered the chapel’s sale.

“They have never, never, sat down with us and said, ‘Let’s make a plan,’ ” said Miguel Ortiz, 41, who emigrated from Mexico in 1989 and has worshipped at La Milagrosa for 18 years.

A maintenance worker for a real estate company in Center City and a member of the cathedral parish’s pastoral council, Ortiz said he had suspected for five years that La Milagrosa’s future was in doubt.

He has accumulated documents on the origins of La Milagrosa and its relationships to the archdiocese and the Vincentians.

“In another life, maybe I’ll be a reporter or a lawyer,” he joked while stuffing papers back into a black canvas briefcase.

Central to Ortiz’s hope that the closure could be averted is an agreement the Vincentians made with another nun, Sister Maria de Jesus Quintana.

Vincentians arrived in Philadelphia in 1909, leading services at Old St. Mary’s Church in what is now Society Hill. Three years later they moved to the Spring Garden neighborhood, which in the late 19th century was home to newly wealthy industrialists.

In 1910, when Philadelphia’s population was 1.55 million, there were between 5,000 and 7,000 Spanish-speaking people in the city, estimated Victor Vazquez-Hernandez, an historian whose doctoral dissertation at Temple University was a history of Puerto Ricans in the city from 1910 to 1945.

Spanish-speaking enclaves were in Southwark, Northern Liberties – and Spring Garden, after La Milagrosa took root there with the help of Sister Maria, the daughter of a cattle rancher and merchant in what is now California.

She was born in San Luis Obispo in 1847 and joined the Daughters of Charity in 1864, coming to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Philadelphia in 1898.

In April 1912, the nun wrote to Vincentian authorities in Europe, seeking permission to “establish a mission for poor Spanish-speaking Catholics in Philadelphia” and agreeing to provide $30,000 to support it, according to an online catalog of letters at DePaul University in Chicago.

Her 1912 agreement with the Vincentians said she would donate the money “for the purpose of securing the spiritual well-being of the Spanish-speaking Colony of Philadelphia.”

The Vincentians did not receive the $30,000 until 1920, when her estate, which included Pennsylvania Railroad Co. stock and assorted railroad bonds, was settled after her death in 1919.

The Vincentians purchased the chapel in June 1912, according to Philadelphia property records.

“This agreement with Sister Quintana has nothing to do with the property or the sale of the property,” said Christopher E. Cummings, a lawyer and partner in the Malvern office of Stradley Ronon Stevens Young.

Ortiz recognizes that the Quintana agreement does not mention the property. “I think it’s more about the formation and continuity of the service to the community, which is still standing and a good number,” he said. “It’s indirect.”

By contrast, St. Katharine Drexel, who donated an estimated $20 million to charitable works for poor blacks and Native Americans, was explicit that her contribution of $1,080 to the Vincentians was for the purchase of 1903 Spring Garden St. and that the proceeds from a sale should be split proportionately.

If the property, which is being marketed by Flynn Co., were to fetch the new assessed value of $846,300, the proceeds to Drexel’s 123-member order would be $74,613.

Schmidt said she recalled two occasions since 1996 when money came back. “Whenever we do get money of this nature, it’s ordinarily used for mission,” as opposed to paying for care of sisters or for buildings and maintenance, she said.

For members of La Milagrosa, where about 150 worship each weekend, according to the archdiocese, the loss of the chapel is heart-wrenching.

“It’s of religious significance and it’s of cultural significance,” said Maria Miranda, who said she has attended Mass at La Milagrosa off and on since 1978, when she arrived in Philadelphia from Puerto Rico.

“That’s our Liberty Bell right there,” she said.

In a not so distant past, corporate sponsorship and Latino advocacy groups were like oil and water.

It wasn’t until the mid 1980′s when companies realized the potential behind Mexican and Latino consumers. As community organizer Steve Renderos remembers the quid pro quo didn’t go mainstream until Coors Brewing Company capitalized on a golden opportunity. It used Cinco de Mayo to repair an already troubled image among Hispanics.

But a few fat cats aside, political outcry and change in the community didn’t come by way Fortune 500 funding. It was a little bit more cunning and inexpensive such as a small group of reporters choosing to use different payphones around Washington, D.C. complaining to the White House that the name of the media room designated for Spanish reporters “lower press” was insensitive and needed fixing.

After numerous nagging calls and a ringing endorsement from then U.S. House of Representative Bill Richardson, the White House acquiesced and changed the name to “specialty press.” No lobbying money was exchanged.

Now, with Hispanics gaining political footing and as eight U.S. Senators plan to give immigration its biggest overhaul in 26 years, companies are endearing themselves with Hispanic political leaders and becoming bedfellows with some of the most influential Hispanic organizations. What seemed like oil and water just a few decades ago is now as common as tamales and chile.

Hispanic organizations and Latino consumers

Mother Jones made light of this in their April 8 piece. Reporter Andy Kroll used The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, which he described as “an obscure offshoot of the 27-member, all-Democratic Congressional Hispanic Caucus,” to show just how much funding has grown for these once inconspicuous organizations.

“CHCI’s coffers have steadily grown in recent years, from nearly $950,000 in revenue in 1990 to $7.7 million in 2012,” Kroll wrote.

The article also pinpoints how $1 million yields a VIP treatment and an opportunity to “maintain a special relationship with CHCI leaders.”

Throw in $300,000 and a company can be the “sole host of the institute’s annual public policy conference, which includes exclusive access to networking events.”

While CHCI maintains that the organization is not for profit, using its money to develop young Latinos by giving them better access to jobs and colleges, many critics have said that organizations such as CHCI and National Council of La Raza are way too involved with big corporations.

Retired educator and current Hispanic Link News Service contributor Jim Lamare made the observation of just how lucrative funding Hispanic organizations was when, a few years ago, he covered a conference hosted by the NCLR — the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.

Lamare wrote in jest that before listening to President Barack Obama deliver the keynote speech he had to hear a word from NCLR’s sponsors.

“One by one, they came to the dais to make a little pitch for their respective companies. Up they marched — a representative from ATT, JP Morgan Chase, McDonalds and Time Warner…” Lamare later wrote.

“All the spiels were delivered in near first-rate English, but the intros were done to a nice spicy Latin beat. Oh yeah, then President Barack Obama spoke.”

Esther Aguilera, president and CEO of CHCI, told VOXXI that her organization and other Hispanic institutions have grown their capacity to serve the Latino thanks to the help from corporate and other supporters.

“As the Latino community’s influence and numbers continue to grow, corporations increasingly understand that it is a good business practice to engage with Latino organizations as Latinos are the future of their workforce and customer base,” Aguilera added pointing out that 73 percent of overall giving comes from individuals.

Only 5 percent comes from corporate funding with less than 2 percent of foundation giving goes to Hispanic organizations, Aguilera said.

Despite good efforts critics argue that National Hispanic organizations go down a slippery slope when enveloped in corporate funding. A recent fight over New York’s ban on large sugary drinks serves as a case in point.

Hispanic organizations along with other advocacy groups aimed at helping people of color, sighted with the bottlers in their fight to stop New York mayor Michael Bloomberg’s efforts to ban high-calorie soft drinks even when obesity affects Hispanics and blacks at alarming levels.

Their effort against Bloomberg’s ban is “not surprising” critics say considering Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. fund Hispanic organizations.

To that end, community organizer Renderos, who is part of Center for Media Justice, said big funding has blinded Hispanic organizations to issues such as net neutrality.

“I can’t speak directly to the relationship between many of these Latino Civil Rights organizations and telecommunications companies,” Renderos told VOXXI, “but when you talk to some of these organizations, what they’ll say is they take money from corporations but it doesn’t impact their stances or our policy platform. But when you look closer, they are often on the same side.”

As far as CHCI is concerned, Aguilera argues that supporters understand that their participation does not guarantee control over policy platform and how the organization is to conduct it’s business.

Renderos said the growth of national Hispanic organizations have alienated many voices. As a result, communities such as Center for Media Justice and Presente.org have sprung up to safeguard issues overlooked.

“We are online communities,” Rendereos said. “These are groups that are saying, we don’t feel reflected by these national groups and we have to establish our own institutions otherwise our voices are not going to be represented.”

From Rolling Stone to Wheat Thins, brands on Vine have leveraged the video-sharing service to market with consumers, empowering fans through co-created campaigns and personalizing the brand-to-fan experience.

While Vine is still very young, usage of the Twitter-owned app has quickly increased; 2,324 videos were uploaded every hour over one weekend in February that included footage from events such as New York Fashion Week, the Grammy’s, and the Northeastern snowstorm.

Brands still wondering how to best accomplish their social marketing goals with Vine should take note of these five Vine accounts and what they’re doing to make their brand stand out:

	Rolling Stone

Popular music/culture magazine Rolling Stone has regularly used Vine to build anticipation for new issues. With Vine, Rolling Stone will reveal cover art and have fans interact via comments about which celebrity they think will appear on that month’s edition.

	ASOS

One of the obvious drawbacks of shopping for clothes online is missing out on the in-store experience of browsing and trying things on. ASOS, an online clothing retailer in the UK, used Vine to demonstrate the appealing aspects of shopping online, particularly the excitement of diving into a new delivery. Followers can tag videos of them opening their ASOS orders with #ASOSUnbox for a chance to win free clothes from the online store.

	Wheat Thins

Wheat Thins utilized Vine and its parent company Twitter to run a clever UGC campaign during the Super Bowl between San Francisco and Baltimore. Wheat Thins asked dwellers from each city to make their case for a free Wheat Thins delivery by submitting a Vine video of their Wheat Thins creation with the tag #MUSTHAVEWHEATTHINS.

	Bacardi UK

Posting photos of alcohol and good times has always been a popular aspect of photo sharing networks like Instagram. Bacardi UK has been using Vine to bring followers video of special Bacardi cocktails being made in six seconds. Users interact and decide which cocktails will be poured.

	30 Seconds to Mars

30 Seconds to Mars shows us a good example of how musicians and yes, even brands, can use Vine to directly interact with diehard fans or brand loyalists. This Vine shows the band thanking fans for pre-ordering their album.

This year, brands are focused on marketing with consumers, using social media to empower fans to collaborate with their favorite brands. If the recent Vine adoption is any indication, brands making the collaborative video play are the ones set to drive big brand-to-fan engagement.

Only on Twitter, folks. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.

Luis Suarez, our antagonistic protagonist here, is something of a bad boy in the soccer world — that is, not necessarily known for his sportsmanship or sense of fair play. Suarez’s latest misstep? Biting an opponent during his Liverpool squad’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea over the weekend.

The bite, of course, drew all sorts of criticism and outrage. But it also gained Suarez a very famous new Twitter follower: ex-boxer Mike Tyson, a notorious biter in his own right.

Tyson famously took a chunk out of Evander Holyfield’s ear during a 1997 fight (then last year tweeted a reference to the carnage while pimping Holyfield’s barbecue sauce).

Media reports over the weekend said Tyson’s follow came just minutes after Suarez’s chomp. We haven’t been able to confirm that, but the uncertainty does raise a juicy conspiracy theory: What if Tyson in fact followed Suarez just before the bite and recruited him into his carnivorous cabal? Now that’d be a meaty sports story, indeed.
